Session Stories

Some sessions are worth telling slowly. These are longer-form accounts of the music we make at the studio — the players, the room, the choices that shape a take, and the occasional film that walked out the door with the band.

Inside a Live Jazz Session — Matthew Liebeck Quartet

Four musicians, one room, almost no overdubs. The Matthew Liebeck Quartet — trumpet, piano, double-bass and drums — spent a day at Hot Milk Studio recording a set of originals and standards live, with full sightlines across the main room.

The setup followed the music: piano on the long wall, bass tight in the corner with the drum kit, trumpet floated on a single Neumann a few steps in front. Headphone mixes were kept light so the players could rely on the room. Most of what you'll hear was the first or second take.

The full write-up — gear list, mic positions, conversation with the band, and the video clips filmed during the session — is being prepared. Check back soon, or write to us if you'd like to be told when it goes live.
